Why Does Fashion Repeat Itself?

It's a very interesting question to ask others and to think about yourself. It happens so frequently that we don't really pay any attention to it. All we care about is being on top of the trends but we don't stop to think about where they have come from...

The fashion industry has come so far especially in the last few years. Including technology and E-textiles in our clothing nowadays can make a huge difference in our life's. So why do we keep looking back into the past?

The Fascination with the Past:

So many people nowadays are watching old-school series or films and becoming obsessed with the fashion trends. With the beauty of Netflix we can easily access these films over and over again and get style inspiration from our favourite characters. My favourites are: Gossip Girl, Clueless and  Legally Blonde. With the checked skirts, thigh-high socks and thick headbands being a running trend throughout all these I can definitely see them creeping back into our wardrobes nowadays. Checked is already back being one of the trends this Autumn/Winter, thigh-high boots are in instead of thigh-high socks and as of headbands... there not here just yet. A lot of 90s fashion trends have been creeping back into our wardrobes too such as chocker's, flared jeans, big hoop earrings, bell bottom sleeves and crop tops.

So what's the obsession?

Many people love looking back at old fashion trends and find a love for them in their hearts. You may hear people say, "I should have been born in that era" or "I think I lived it that era in my past life". Although this may be a joke their love for the fashion trends is not, so bringing them back is our way of 'living' in the moment of time.

No more styles left to create:

Another reason why so many old trends are coming back into fashion is because we simply cannot create any more new designs. There has been so many different trends over the years that we are now finding it hard to create completely different designs and trends. Instead we just pick out bits from old trends and evolve them in a new way to create the styles we wear today. At the end of the day there are only a certain amount of colours, patterns and shapes of clothing that we can create, right?

Like I spoke about at the start of the post we are incorporating E-textiles and technology into our fashion industries nowadays but we are still using old trends to do that. Say for instance we are using a turtle neck top (which were also very popular in the 90s) and adding things such as lights to them to create a new design. Although we have created a brand new item we have still used essence from the past in the design.

The world around us is constantly changing along with our styles and looks. You don't realise this until you look back at old photos and think, 'what have I done to my hair and what is that makeup' or 'why did you let me go outside in that outfit'. The truth is you loved that outfit or style back then and you may even come to love it again soon!

Fashion trends are always circling and old trends tend to pop back up after about 20-30 years, hence why we are seeing all the 90s fashion rends coming back. If this cycle carries on in the future we will be raving about low-rise flares and boob tubes once again! I'm not really sure whether that's a good thing or not. At least you can give your children or grand-children style advise or lend them your old clothes!

I hope you enjoyed this post and found it fascinating to think about where we get our style inspiration from. See you back here next Friday for another discussion post..
