Over the past 100 years women's body types have changed a lot. Every women wants to be 'on trend' with their body type and feel as though they fit in. We are always mindlessly changing our own body types to fit the norm of the specific decade or year. I find it really interesting to see how different the ideal body types are over the years and truly wonder what it will be in the next couple of decades...
1920s - The Roaring 20s:
The roaring twenties was all about the boyish figure. Women in the 1920s often flattened their chest and wore a short bobbed hairstyle. Small straight waists were also popular in this era.
1930s - 1950s - Golden Age of Hollywood:
Throughout the next three decades the ideal body shape changed dramatically. Women started to become a lot more curvier with an hourglass figure. Breasts were larger and enhanced instead of flattened and waists remained slim.
1960s - Swinging 60s:
Again the ideal body shape of the 60s changed majorly from the previous decade. The hourglass figure turned into a thin body shape with long slim legs. It changed from curvy and sexy to thin and adolescent.
1980s - Supermodel Era:
Body types in the 1980s didn't change much from the 60s. However, instead of the thin tall figure women become more athletic with toned arms. Women started to bring back curves while still keeping a slim figure.
1990s - Heroin Chic:
The 1990s was all about the stick thin body type. Women wanted to have very pale almost see-through skin. It was also popular for bones to be showing through the skin.
2000s - Today - Post Modern Beauty:
You will all be aware of our current ideal body shape. Women nowadays work towards a flat stomach, healthy glowing skin, large breasts and booties and thigh gaps. Many women even get plastic surgery to achieve these ideal goals.
I hope you enjoyed learning a bit more about how ideal body shapes have changed throughout our history. I found it really interesting to look at and think about how ideals have changed throughout the past 5 years. If you want to read more of my discussion posts then head back every Friday to see more. See you soon...
